Have you recently decided that your bathroom needs a makeover? There’s a lot to think about, it may be one of the smallest rooms of the house but it’s also one of the most important, so It’s essential to get it right the first time! For a project this important, the key is to plan everything carefully so your bathroom renovation goes as smoothly as possible, avoiding any unexpected issues along the way.
Here are my top 6 tips to take into account before you begin your bathroom reno…
1. Measure your bathroom
Draw a basic scale plan of it. Decide what items you want in the room and get rough dimensions of of each item, remember to leave space around items. Toilets – need space either side, vanity may need room for cleaning either side. Sometimes it helps to tape boxes on your actual floor so you can really see how much space things take up or if you have left enough space around the item.

2. Design

What kind of feel, look and colours do you want your bathroom to have? Dark and moody, light and luxe? I suggest going out and looking at a lot of suppliers, take pictures of everything you like so you review everything later and make some decisions.
3. Functionality & Details
Remember to think of any items you may want to included in your bathroom, and list everything you’re going to need to buy including the size it needs to be – ie vanity, heated towel rail, mirror, robe hooks, a sealer on the glass to stop water marks, a sealer on the tiles, or epoxy grout.

4. Budget
Not only do you need to have the money to pay the professionals but you also need to factor in all the bathroom items you’ll need to buy – tiles, bathware, tapware, shower glass. Will I need to hire a portaloo and shower while the reno is underway? Remember always have a decent contingency – 20% – 30% the more the better and hopefully you won’t need it.
But hey you may end up deciding that your new bathroom needs some new towels!
5. Get professional opinions
Find out as much info as you can. Get trades people to quote. Are your electrics or plumbing old, you may need to upgrade? Show or tell your ideas to a professional who knows what they’re doing. They may have ways of saving you money by pointing out tips on locations of plumbing, or practical tips on a size, or an idea that may not work. Or even spot potential issues before you begin.

6. Contractors
Lastly, who’s going to run the job? Things need to happen quickly, so your bathroom renovation doesn’t drag on forever. You also need to have all the trades people lined up and everyone should know when they’re expected.
Bathrooms are fast-paced projects that often require multiple trades, meaning there will be a lot of phone calls and coordination to keep everything on track and avoid delays. Having a dedicated project manager is a good idea for a smooth and timely renovation.
