Curtain Styles 101 – the ultimate guide

by | Jan 29, 2025

I believe curtains are key to really making your home feel dressed, and they can completely transform a room. But with so many styles available, how do you know which one to pick? Below I’ll walk you through the key curtain styles and details, so you can help choose the look that’s right for you…

Box Pleat (Inverted Pleat)

A versatile tailored option that suits traditional and contemporary rooms. The pleats are evenly inverted across the top so that when drawn they sit flat across the header. However if using a pattern think about how this will sit in the pleat to minimise disrupting the pattern. They can be hung with a pole or track.

Pencil Pleat

Once the go-to option, this classic header style gathers the fabric into pencil-sized pleats. It can be altered slightly using the tape at the back allowing you to create a tighter or looser fullness. It’s best for finer fabrics so the pencil pleat can ripple properly.

Single, Double or Triple Pleat

A single pleat uses less fabric and generally suits a more modern or simple interior. Ideal for a small window or where there is not a lot of room to stack back the fabric. Can also be a good option for sheers.

Double Pleat also known as a Dutch pleat, a smart structured look that suits most fabric styles, and is a good in-between style.

Triple pleats also known as French pleats are classically elegant. This style features 3 evenly spaced pleats pinched at the top creating a fuller effect, so suits a lighter weight fabric. Ideal for a more formal room.

Wave (S Fold)

This is a more contemporary minimalist look, it’s a simple clean line that has a symmetrical wave/ripple across the top. This look suits most fabric styles including patterned, great for a continuous wide width fabric as no joins are needed

Tab Top

This curtain style is very informal, the folds along the pole can be very random hence creating a relaxed look. What’s more they are easy to install as the loops literally slide through the pole. Probably a cheaper option for the more budget conscious

Eyelet

Eyelet curtains are a modern casual look featuring metal rings across the top, to be used with a pole. They have a casual drape and clean lines which can suit a variety of fabrics

With the right curtains in your home, you can really change the vibe of a room – kind of like picking the perfect outfit. Go neutral for a subtle, timeless feel, choose bright colours for a statement, or opt for patterns to bring in some energy and personality.
