It feels like new builds are everywhere at the moment—particularly here in Auckland. Designed for efficiency and broad appeal, they are clean and modern—but can also feel a little impersonal and generic. With crisp white walls, standard fixtures, and no architectural detailing, they’re undeniably functional, but often lack the depth and individuality that makes a house feel like home – so it’s no surprise many people look for ways to add character to a new build.

So how do we add character to a new build and bring personality into these spaces, to keep them from feeling just like your neighbours, without completely overhauling the them?

Use colour

People are often hesitant to introduce colour into a new build—but it’s one of the easiest ways to make a big impact.

This could be as simple as painting a wall, an entire room, or introducing wallpaper, say in an entrance alcove or powder room. It doesn’t have to be bold, even subtle tonal changes can completely shift the feel of a space. It’s amazing just how much warmth and personality a colour can change bring to the entire feel of the room

Layer your space

Layering is what transforms a house into a home.

Rugs, curtains, cushions, art instantly soften the harder surfaces while adding your personality. I personally love curtains, they make a room feel dressed, smart and cosy. Whilst also having the added benefit of warmth and can soften the harsh New Zealand light when needed.

A rug can also pull a space together with texture, or colour, and can be a break from the often large areas of timber or laminate flooring.

Add architectural detail

These are the kinds of changes that help add character to a new build without the need for a full renovation.

Wall mouldings or panelling – can instantly elevate a space (an entranceway is a great place to make an impact).

Built-in joinery or shelving helps create functional zones that work for both family time and quiet retreat.

Lighting is everything

Lighting has a huge impact on how a space feels, yet it’s often overlooked in new builds.

Swapping out standard developer lighting, and introducing layers—pendants, wall lights, and lamps, can completely change the atmosphere. Many new homes rely heavily on downlights, which can feel quite flat.

Interesting wall lights can be a fun and artistic option. Floor or table lamps, even something as simple as changing bulbs to a warm colour in the lounge, instantly changes mood from “show home” to “home.”

Let it evolve

To be honest, adding character to a new build doesn’t happen overnight—soul develops over time.

It’s okay for a home to evolve. It isn’t created in a single install—it’s layered over time, through thoughtful choices, meaningful pieces, and the confidence to make it your own. That said, making a few intentional changes right off the bat is a good start in the right direction.
